Mini Set - Hogwarts Great Hall



Hey all! So here's just a couple pics of my shop final group project from back in October, which was to recreate a set in miniature form. (I say mini, but this thing is about 4 ft across.)

We chose the great hall of Hogwarts. Not the most accurate representation, but good for the amount of time we had to work on it. We decided to turn the closest set of windows into doors so it would be more like a theatre set than a film set. We even had working floating candles made of LEDs! :D

Nickel - Tube Head - Katamari


Greetings humans! ;D This post shall go into the details of how I constructed the tube head for Nickel. I started exactly the same as I did for Prince and Princess, by creating a hole in the bottom of the tube for my head to go through.


My helmet had this stupid point at the back which needed to be sawed off... :P And so I did.

I added the blocks of foam so  that the helmet, and by extension the entire head, would sit at the right height and angle. This was especially important for Nickel because the head had to clear the shoulders of my box body.

We visually determined the placement, marked it out, and then glued it all in place.

I had my friend Ian do the soldering (and re-soldering) of all my LED circuits for this project. I ran out of time to do it myself. It looks fantastic! I will go into more details of how those were constructed in a later post.

The hubs that the LED's were put into in the red cylinders were made from a disc of foam core and a cylinder of illustration board. And lots of glue. LOTS.

I drilled a hole where each LED would go, evenly spacing the array. Then I farmed them out.

These beauties were returned to me! ;D

I then taped all the exposed wires so I wouldn't get a crossed wire and end up with an electrical fire. That would be very bad.

...Particularly because it is not so easy to get this costume off quickly...

Then I cut 2 foam core discs to go in the end of the tube. These would fit snugly and be glued into place.

Then I cut a ring/disc that I glued around the bottom of each hub, so that they now resembled a top hat crossed with a jellyfish.
Then I cut a thin ring of foam core to act as an inner support for my red cylinders, and a circle of a plastic binder to act as a frosted filter. The black rings were my only gluing surface for this entire cylinder.

Meanwhile, I had Alex add an illustration board outer layer to my head. (The sonotube had obtained numerous dings in the garage.)

Then I worked on the cylinders. Using clear tape, I carefully taped together strips of red acetate  and curled them around.

I had a friend of my mum's--who has access to a laser cutter--cut me 2 perfect circles in red plexiglass. These were glued to the frosting circle and then the foam ring.

Alex then glued the 2 foam discs in the ends of the tube. The eye slot and neck hole were also nicely cut.

Back in the land of plastic, I carefully glued the acetate roll to the black ring along the top edge. The end result is a bit fragile, but looks quite clean and I am very happy with it. Because of the multiple layers to the red acetate, it did not need a frosted filter.

Alex then spackled the joins in the illustration board and sanded them out to achieve a nice, smooth and almost seamless look! ;D



With the 2 red cylinders done I was ready to assemble. The top-hat-jellyfish were carefully inserted through the neck hole. Then the foam core discs--ones on each end of the tube head and their respective jelly-hat--glued together, making sure that the electrical hub was centered in the middle of the hole. The red cylinders--which were made to fit into the hole exactly--were slotted over the hubs and then glued into place.

The border on Nickel's face was finished with a rectangle of craft foam, glued on and painted grey. A fabric piece was attached so that Nickel's face flaps up like the rest of them.

Alex says: I LOVE GLUING!!!! D:<

...Which is her way of protesting against all things sewn. :P
 The antenna was glued on and so were the decorative nuts. ;D

The final step was to solder the switch and battery into my electrical circuit to make everything work!

An in depth look at Nickel's circuitry--including diagrams and calculations-- will be coming up in the next month or so, but I will be taking a bit of a break from all things Katamari for the moment. I am also planning on doing a tutorial on how to put together a simple LED circuit. Those will probably be up in september or october sometime.

Crow Soldier - Head

Welcome to my first complete, and detailed cosplay construction post! :D I've been working on this one since March, and man has it been a long haul.

So without further ado, I present to you the Crow Soldier! These charming minions are from the anime series Princess Tutu, which has been my favourite series since I first watched it all those years ago! :D Costumes that are actually stylized to look like costumes! What a novel idea! XD

This post will focus on the construction of the base frame and light rigging in the head. As well as the feathers. The beak will have it's own separate post, as it's got quite the tale to tell. The rest of the costume (poncho, tights, shoes) will also have it's own post.

I used the head  as part of my Ryerson portfolio interview when it was in a half finished state, but more on that later!

I started off with a bicycle helmet I got off of craigslist for 10$ (it was hard to find a ladies small size helmet as most were mens large, which would not do for my petit head!). I evicted a wig from my wig head to use as a model to work on. Not very accurate, as it is smaller than my head, but elevated the bottom of the frame off of the table so I had easy manoueverability while working.
 My main concern with making this head was that after attaching the lights, feathers and beak it would be really heavy. So I brainstormed how to make the frame as light as possible, while still maintaining enough durability.

After much thought (and toying with papermaché as a last resort), I decided to go on cosplay.com and look up a tutorial for mascot heads. I found this one (http://matrices.net/matricessuit.asp) which gave me a perfect idea of materials to use. They used plastic canvas and yarn as their base because it was lightweight and easy to work with. It's also really cheap! XD I figured that it would also work for me, but I would need something stronger to hold it into position because this wasn't a mascot head that would be covered in foam for the final shape. That's where the wire came in! I had to find one that malleable enough that I could work with it, but strong enough that it wouldn't get crushed easily.

In short: The wire would serve as the main framework to help hold the correct shape, the plastic canvas would be used to fill the areas between wires, and the yarn would hold it all together.

I held up the wire to my head wearing the helmet in a mirror and determined how big I should make the bottom circle. I cut the wire and bent it into shape. Using pliers to bend the ends and make it stay.

 Then I secured some yarn through the vents in the top of the helmet.















I got my little sister to help me tie the hoop to the yarn so it would hang slightly lower in the front, but level on the sides.

Some of the wires refused to stay in the right position, so I marked where
 they should be with marker in case they moved.

Then I used the wire to make a birdcage (no pun intended) to which I could attach the plastic canvas.



Hmm... not completely round, but the best I could do.

The wires were secured to the top with more yarn.


Then came the painful task of sewing the plastic canvas to the framework. It was not hard, but my needle (which I am extremely grateful for! what a lucky find!) was just slightly too big for the holes, and was difficult to push through. After a while my fingers felt quite bruised...

I wasn't too concerned about airflow (meaning dying of overheating) as I figured it would not be a problem with the wide hole in the bottom. (I was right btw.)

I'm not very happy with the way the back turned out here, as my previous
 errors carried through right to the end... I ended up with the back having
 some lumps in it, but I was able to make the bottom less noticeable by
making the feathers hang down more on the right side to cover it up.


 The next step before completing the mesh was to make the eye sockets. I measured and attached the flashlights with tape (I never fixed them on with something better because I'd like to revisit this costume and use an actual circuit with a switch system instead of crappy flashlights. Therefore I made sure they could be removed without destroying the whole frame)

I made a paper cone and then covered it in aluminum foil, so it would reflect the light and make the eyes glow slightly more.


 We had leftover red plexiglass from Kamina's glasses, so I decided to use that to cover the eyes instead of using red acetate (overhead paper), which I thought might melt under a glue gun.

Unfortunately, we now lack access to a laser cutter, (and someone who knows how to operate one) so I had to embark on the long and frightening process of scoring and snapping the plexiglass into shape. Ugh.... why me? D:<

^That's what it looks like snapped. That's as close as I dared to go for fear of ruining the piece. I then had to sand the edges until it somewhat resembled my template.

The sockets were then taped to the flashlights and glued to the frame. 

I also added in a wire to show where the hole for the beak would go.

 The plexiglass was too see-through for my liking, it wasn't looking as good as I had hoped. So I added a double layer of tissue paper in behind to give it a look like the eyes were glowing from within.

Much nicer.

I taped it on to secure it while I glued it in place.


 There are the finished eyes.

At this point I also spray painted the bottom wire black so it would be less noticeable when I started attaching the feathers.

I originally started stitching the feathers to the frame because I thought it would be neater. But it was an arduous process that frankly just took too bloody long! D:< I quickly abandoned that approach and settled for the quicker, if messier, process of glue gunning them on. That being said: gluing on 400 feathers individually takes a REALLY LONG TIME. D:< I had to stop in the middle because I ran out of a certain kind of feather. So I was essentially working on this part on and off for 2 months.

This is the point where I brought it in with me to my Ryerson interview. I had wanted to get it done for then, but that was a completely ridiculous fantasy. XD As it is, it was barely ready for Anime North. But I thought that it showed my work progression and how I made things. It is also easier to see how something is made when it is in progress. As well as it is much easier to look at the object itself than pictures of it. They were very interested in my work! :D


 As for the feathers themselves, I wanted originally to use just the black ones that had an emerald sheen to them. Because they look really nice. But after pricing it I quickly abandoned that plan. I was worried about using just the flat black ones because I know for a fact that flat black does not photograph well at all. What I ended up doing was a mosaic of colours. I used the emerald ones as well as two different sizes of black feathers. (Which were two slightly different blacks as well! :D)

I think it actually ended up looking much better than my original plan.  :D



 I had to cut the centre wire so I could slot the beak in at this point. I was able to tuck it in with a bit of difficulty.


 Looking good right? :D I did this while having an Anne of Green Gables marathon with my sister. She was working on her costume at the same time.

 FINALLY FINISHED IT! :D Here's a 360 for you.

I really like the blues and greens in there. I think it adds depth and helps define the texture better.

I don't plan on doing a costume with this many feathers for a long time. It's crazy expensive (if totally worth it!) and time consuming. But it looks AMAZING! I'm really happy with the finished look of this part of the costume. :D
